MyFoxHouston - Shopping online can be more convenient than braving crowded malls and fighting traffic, but consumers need to be careful so they are not the victim of a scam.

Michael Gregg, chief operating officer of Superior Solutions, Inc., explains on FOX 26 Morning News how consumers can be lured into internet scams.

Gregg says that some scam artists try to create fake websites that look like websites of established retail companies.

To verify that a website is secure, Gregg says consumers should see if "https" is in the U.R.L., if a padlock icon is in the lower corner and avoid buying from websites that allow pop-up advertising.

Gregg also says legitimate retail companies will only ask consumers for names, addresses, phone numbers and credit card numbers. No one should ever reveal their social security number, bank routing number or driver's license number.

To help consumers recognize fraudulent websites, they can refer to the Better Business Bureau, Yelp and Angie's List website.
