They had battled weight problems all their lives, but two sisters decided to turn it all around by taking the weight off. And they did it in such a simple way that they insist anyone can do it as well.
A bicycle ride on a beautiful day. It is a simple journey that less than one year earlier would have been out of the question for sisters Nancy Akin and Jennifer Leadbetter.
From a childhood of fried foods and a family history of weight problems, these two women faced a potentially dangerous health scenario.
With a simple strategy, Leadbetter dropped 100 pounds while Akin lost 65 pounds. It started with meeting every week with a nutritionist who taught the two of them about healthy food choices.
The women said they kept a food journal so that every day they would write down what they ate, including calorie and fat gram information.
Akin considered lap band surgery, which is a route that an older sister had taken.
The sisters did not give up everything like key lime pie and french fries completely, but now they portion out food, get calorie counts for restaurant food and embraced the lowfat or fat-free choices.
On days where the calorie count is up, the sisters make sure to cut back on calories the next day, so that riding into the sunset with their health in control is for the first time, a real possibility.
Most people realize heart disease is a very common killer in the United States.
