HOUSTON - More than one million people are diagnosed with skin cancer every year. That's more than all other cancers combined.

Here are some easy ways to protect yourself from the summer sun.

Slip, slop, slap, wrap. It may sound funny but here's what it means. Slip on a shirt (so the long sleeves protect from the sun), slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat, and wrap on your sunglasses before you head outdoors.

Doctors say you shouldn't avoid the sun. They suggest you get a good balance of sunshine while protecting yourself with sunscreen and clothing.

"I have to cover my head too these days. The first time I got a sunburn on the top of my head it was an eye opening experience. I thought 'How could this happen to me,” one Houston man laughs as he lifts his hat to show off his thinning hair, but he's right. Physicians suggest you slather on sunscreen everywhere you can.

You're advised to wear a sunscreen with at least 30 SPF. Also look for sunscreen that protects from UVA and UVB rays.

The number of skin care cases is increasing faster than any other cancer. As for the fake sun, experts suggest you stay away from tanning beds.

"If you want that look there are many products on the market. They're better than what they used to be. They don't give you that orange look anymore" says Dr. Teresa Wright of Texas Children's Hospital.

You're advised to see your doctor regularly and do self examinations. Doctor Ronald Rapini says most people could have dozens of moles on their body. It's when the mole looks funny when you have to worry.

He says just remember the a,b,c,d's when examining your skin for possible cancer.

"A is asymmetry, B is border irregularity, C is color variation and D is diameter. Beware of a spot that's more than six millimeters" says Dr. Rapini.

Dr. Rapini says E is probably the most important and that is evolution. If the mole is changing or growing, see a doctor immediately.

May is skin cancer awareness month. Friday is Don't Fry Day. Everyone is encouraged to practice sun safety on Friday and everyday. Don't forget to reapply sunscreen every two to three hours.
