Outrageous Rodeo Fashion: Who's Wearing What

HOUSTON - It's rodeo time at Pinto Ranch Western Wear in Houston, where among the racks of leather and lace, you'll also find crystals, camouflage, and just plain white shirts.

"You can come in and get an outfit for less than a hundred bucks," said Bea Garcia, Marketing Director. "But we also have these choice pieces, if you're really looking for something to standout."

Among those items, a belt made of genuine hair, decorated with 3 inch tall Swarovski Crystal crosses, and boasting a pretty heavy price tag.

So who buys a $600 belt?

"Well, you know, Texans do," said Garcia. "Houstonians do."

Pricey? Yes. Different? Definitely.

"This is kinda our western version of Lady Gaga," said Garcia, as a model showed off a $1,395 shawl, made of leather, crystal, feathers and mink.

To be fair, the store does offer a variety of "normal" rodeo wear. Hot this season? Mexican-style peasant dresses, paired with embroidered boots.

It's top to bottom embroidery," said Garcia.

Most of us would rather wear the normal stuff, but it's the "over the top" gear that we asked Garcia to show us, because a denim outfit wouldn't be, well, complete without a little extra hand painting and studs.

"It's actually called the "Oh My God" outfit. OMG. Because when you see it, it’s so fabulous."

Fabulous comes in kids sizes over at Little Patooties off Westheimer and Kirby.

From denim dresses and pink cowgirl hats to 300 rock star frocks, paired with pink ostrich boots featuring brightly colored heart designs.

The $2,000 boots belonged to the model and are not available in the store, but they complete an outfit that’s makes her rodeo-ready.

"She's ready to go to Selena Gomez. Right Alison," said Katherine Jones, owner.

Another model donned a black sequined dress, decorated with silver sequined stars. Price tag? $108.

"It’s a cool dress, and she put her western shirt on top," said Jones.

Little Patooties also carries pint size versions of a top designer's western line, in both girls and boys styles.

"It's big with the movie stars," said Jones. "Sarah Jessica Parker wore (this designer) in her last movie."
