GALVESTON, Texas - Hurricane Ike was a singular and defining moment in the lives of many people, so it is no surprise that Ike is the main character in paintings and poems, photos and films.

"After Ike" is a just-released compilation of pictures and prose, a book documenting the storm and its aftermath through the eyes of 20 Galveston schoolchildren.

Their older brothers and sisters at Ball High School made moving pictures their medium of choice, producing a video called "Ike: A Documentary."

Short-film maker David Purdie tackled the same subject matter from a tourist's-eye view. His "Galvest-gone!" claimed third place at the Aurora Picture Show. It is currently screening at the River Oaks Theatre.

All three projects are on public display Saturday, September 12, 2009. For details, see the schedule below.

-- A book signing by the authors of "After Ike: 20 Stories from 20 Galveston Kids" will take place Saturday, Sept. 12, at MOD Coffee & Tea Shop on 2126 Postoffice in Galveston from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.

-- "Ike: A Documentary," a movie produced by students of Ball High School will take place Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Grand 1894 Opera House in Galveston at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.

-- "Galvest-gone!," a short film by David Purdie, will be shown at the River Oaks Theatre in Houston on Sept. 12 at midnight (before "Rocky Horror Picture Show")
