It’s the brainchild of Dr. Don Hutson of The Cowboy Solution. Hutson has been teaching these seminars for nearly 6 years now, just outside of Montgomery, Texas.

But Hutson will tell you, he first got the idea from a horse.

“Horses have made it for 50 million years based on one thing,” explains Hutson. “They don't trust anybody. In the horse world, they are the food in the food chain. And so they have lived because they don't trust you.”

Don Hutson: In other words, they're trusting you, (the rider), with their life. And if they're going to trust you with their life, they're going to make darn sure that you are in control. Whenever there's a hole in leadership, the horse will find it and fill it.

Don Hutson: I'm very, very quick to say that it was a horse that changed my life. I had gotten into a situation where I had basically lost everything, some tragedies in life that forced me to make a change. And so I'm riding this horse down the road one day and this horse stopped dead still in his tracks and looked at me as if to say, “I don't get it.” The horse wasn't bad. He just didn't understand what I wanted. But he didn't speak English and I had to find a way to communicate. So once I worked to find a way to communicate so he could understand, something started happening. Something pretty special.

Don Hutson: The more that I could build that trust and earn that trust, the better I could get to where I was going to go. But something else happened. Not only could I get to where I was going to go easier, there was less conflict. I could achieve a task faster, more efficiently. I didn't get bucked off. So I decided that there's gotta be a way, what if you could do that same thing in the human world? What if we could teach leaders how to be good leaders and to develop willing participants for those that they lead? What would be the benefit for that? So what we did was, we developed a program where we show people. We can bring leaders here from all walks of life, and we can show you how to build strong partnerships based on the one thing that makes everything faster: trust.

Don Hutson: In our program, the horses are the stars of the show, they are the evaluators, they are mirrors of who you are. So what we ask a corporate CEO to look at is that you need to get to do things faster. And you need to learn, first of all, to build trust and to earn trust from those employees, so when they look at you they go, “What? What do you want?” You have to look in the mirror and make a self discovery about what do I need to do as a CEO to earn trust.
