"Be your own boss." It sounds tempting. But in a tough economy, can "work at home" businesses really work for you?

Karen Tennant has found the perfect recipe for raising extra income in a recession. The former stay-at-home mom is now a consultant for Pampered Chef, selling and demonstrating culinary products in the comfort of other people's homes.

Since she loves home entertaining, it's the perfect mix.

With cost-cutting menus, she says, it's a great way to save on eating out.

"What I can do", Karen says, "is go into people's homes and show them how they can keep everybody at home, and save a few bucks. "

Karen cooked up the idea of working for Pampered Chef after bumping into longtime consultant Jennifer Horton. In an economic bust, Jennifer says her business is booming.

"I actually have not been affected in any way", she says, smiling.

Carrie Fruge' isn't letting economic tough times get under her skin. She's now a consultant for Arbonne International skin care and cosmetics.

"You don't have to have the fear that you're going to be laid-off", she says, "that you're going to wake up and there's not going to be anything for you."

Carrie wanted a way to boost the family's income, while still being able to home-school her kids. As an Arbonne consultant, she's got the flexibility she needs.

"You can choose our own hours, you get to choose how long you want to work or when you want to work."

"Every consultant does it their own way", Carrie says, "I do a lot of one-on-ones because of my children. So I set up a lot of play dates, and as the children play, we talk Arbonne."

These days, with brick-and-mortar businesses going bust, more and more people are turning to home-based direct sales businesses to substitute or supplement family income.

It's become a multi-billion dollar industry, with hundreds joining up every day.

Consultants say, their businesses give them more control over their financial destiny.

The recipe is simple, they say: The more you work at it, the more it pays off.
