Emily Akin

FOX 26 Consumer Reporter

Emily Akin has been a news reporter for 35 years and has covered many major local, national and international stories.

She has more than 15 years experience in the Houston TV market, primarily as a consumer reporter. She is currently FOX 26's Consumer Advocate, giving a voice to people who need help.

Emily and her "Take It To Akin" volunteers run a consumer hot line Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. fielding calls from viewers who have consumer questions.

Emily began her career in the 1970's reporting for radio stations and National Public Radio. By the early 80s, she had jumped to TV covering politics for the NBC station in Albuquerque. She later moved into the main anchor slot.

From KOB-TV she went to WPLG-TV, ABC affiliate in Miami as the business reporter, morning anchor then feature reporter.

A desire to be closer to family brought Emily, her husband and two daughters to Houston (her mother is fourth- generation Texan).
In addition to Emily's work in Television News, the veteran news reporter has taught journalism and advanced broadcast news at the University of Houston and Houston Community College. She recently completed her Master's Degree from Rice University in Liberal Studies with a focus on Journalism Ethics.

Emily has received numerous awards. In 1999 the Houston Press Club named Emily 'Reporter of the Year'.

Her hobbies are growing orchids, Chinese brush painting and eating chocolate.
