OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Brandon Moss hit a grand slam and the Oakland Athletics gave Jeff Samardzija more run support yesterday than he has had all season in a 13-1 victory over the Houston Astros. Jed Lowrie had three hits and drove in a run for the A's. Samardzija was 2-7 with the Cubs despites a 2.83 ERA.

NEW YORK (AP) - Brandon McCarthy threw six more solid innings as the New York Yankees beat the Texas Rangers 4-2 yesterday for their sixth win in seven games. Brett Gardner doubled, scored a run and drove in one as the Yankees kept up their push since the All-Star break. Texas fell to 3-17 in July and dropped 22 games under .500.

NEW YORK (AP) - The pitching-poor Texas Rangers plan to add right-hander Jerome Williams and will start him Friday night against AL West-leading Oakland. The Rangers will purchase Williams' contract from Triple-A Round Rock. Williams was released by Houston earlier this month after going 1-4 with a 6.04 ERA in 26 relief appearances.

THE WOODLANDS, Texas (AP) - Qualifying medalists Sam Horsfield and Sean Crocker each won two matches yesterday in the U.S. Junior Amateur to advance to the quarterfinals at The Club at Carlton Woods. Horsfield beat South Korea's Won Jun Lee 3 and 2 in the second round. Crocker beat John Augenstein 3 and 2.
